The map you (probably) didn't know you needed

Hey Reader.

How are you doing this week? Really?

Pre-S: A quick story for you today, then some links to help you (and me!).

🧭 I once arrived in a city I'd never visited and spent the first two hours going in circles.

Not because the city was confusing. Because I hadn't looked at a map before I left the hotel.

Something similar happens in thesis writing.

You're in the middle of it. You've written chapters, revised sections, and gathered sources. But somewhere along the way, you've stopped being able to see what you've actually got. You know the words, but you're not sure what they're doing.

That's not a writing problem. It's a navigation problem.

When you know what each part of your thesis is for, something shifts. The literature review isn't just background. It's the case you're building for why your question matters. Your methodology isn't a hoop. It's the explanation of why your approach is the right one for this contribution. Your findings aren't just results. They're the answer you've been moving toward all along.

Once you can name the purpose of each section, you stop writing in the dark. You write with direction.

I've been thinking about this a lot recently, and I made a short video about it this week. If you're at a point where you're not quite sure what you've got or where you're going next, this one's for you.

Two other things to mention this week:

First, if you have two minutes, I'd really value you filling in a short subscriber survey. It helps me understand what would be most useful for you right now.

Second, the Doctoral Check-In app is launching inside the Doctoral Success Circle this week. If you're already a member, you'll get the link there. If you're not yet in the Circle, now's a good moment to join.

Always in your corner,

Notice what shifted for her. Not the workload. The sense that the...
